Au: I- I can’t stay like this. I thought if I gave him time, it would heal his wounds but it hasn’t, and I don’t think he wants it to. I don’t think I can wait as long as he needs me to. I don’t have that much time to give.
(Albert hugs her. They remain silent, hugging a beat too long)
A: Come stay with me for a while. Maybe he’ll come to his senses if you’re away for a bit.
Au: Alright. Just… Just let me grab my things and say goodbye.
A: Of course. I’ll be waiting outside.
(Albert exits. Audrey takes a long look at her left ring finger, where the engagement ring from Thomas sits. She gently removes it, and taking a ring box out of her pocket, she places the ring inside. At the same time,Thomas hides the bottle under his pillow, and feigns sleep. Audrey enters quietly, wary of things being thrown at her. She notices he is sleeping, and she quietly places the ring box next to his head. She leans down and kisses him on the forehead. He continues to feign sleep. As she speaks, she strokes his hair.)
Au: (quietly) I can’t say that I know how hard this has been for you, because I don’t. I wasn’t there to see the things that you saw, the things that made you feel like this. If I could take even an ounce of your pain away from you, I would do it in an instant. (beat) But I can’t because you won’t let me. And staying here causes me pain. (beat, whispered) You promised me you would come back to me, so where are you? I know you’re in there, somewhere deep down. Stop hiding. Please?
(She lies down, hugging him. Eventually, she stands up to leave. He grabs her hand gently, as though he had turned over in his sleep and his hand happened to fall on hers. She gently slips her arm free, and quietly heads stage left. She pauses, and turns back for a moment. She still believes he is sleeping.)
Au: I’m so sorry, Thomas. I love you. I think I always will. (beat) But it’s the memory of you that I love, not the man I see now. I know I need to go, if only to give you a chance. (whispered) Goodbye.
(She takes a deep breath, and exits. As soon as she leaves, he slowly sits up. He notices the ring box, and he picks it up. He slowly opens it. He stares at it, then looks in the direction she left. In a miserable rage he throws the ring box at the door. He stares after it, debating whether or not to pick it up. Instead, he picks up his bottle to take another drink. Lights out.)
Dim lights except for a spotlight on each person. Albert in a tux, stands stage left, and Audrey in a white dress, stands stage right.
Albert: I love her.
Audrey: He loves me.
Albert: She loves me.
Audrey: I love him.
Albert: I love you.
Audrey: I’ll never leave you.
Both: Until the day I die, I’m yours.
Albert: I’ll never give up on you.
Audrey: I’ll never take you for granted.
Both: I’ll treasure you always.
Audrey: To have you,
A: To hold you,
Both: From this day forward,
Au: For better,
A: For worse,
Au: For richer,
A: For poorer,
Both: In sickness, In health,
Au: To love,
A: To cherish,
Both: Till death do us part.
Au: I will love and honour you all the days of my life.
A: I will love and honour you all the days of my life.
(Lights black out. A single gunshot sounds.)
