I fell asleep, surprisingly comfortable, as I was sleeping on the couch, Linh on its twin. As I showered, I'd forced myself to make a decision. So once I arrived at school, I found Dante, immediately asking if I could speak to him at break. He agreed. At break, I found him by my locker. He took my hand before I could say anything, and dragged me to an empty corridor.
"Before you break up with me, I just wanted to say thanks.", he said. Dante was so sweet, and I was being so harsh, I didn't even know what to say. I opened my mouth to respond, but then he cut me off...again. "I guess I understand."
"Thanks for what? And what do you mean by 'understand'?"
He brushed some hair out of my face. "Thanks for giving me a chance. More time than the others, I mean. And, I mean, I get why you do-", he gestured to everything, and nothing at the same time,"-all this. Some people try when they really care about someone else."
"You know?", I ask. He laughed. "Everyone knows. Except him. That's why everyone justifies your reasons for being so...y'know, all around. Of course, a lot of us still try. Like, maybe you'd fall for someone else."
"Oh.", I said quietly. "I'm sorry."
"I knew it was going to happen eventually. But, I kinda hoped you'd give me more time to prove myself. I guess there are just some people we just love too much, right, Aves?"
"You said loved. Like, as in, you love me?", I asked.
"I did not say that.", he said quickly, and I laughed. I stood on my tiptoes, and kissed his cheek.
"You are amazing.", I promised. He laughed.
"So what now for you?"
I'd made the decision last night. I didn't need to be so crazily unsatisfied because someone didn't make me feel special, or because I was lonely.
"I'm going single for a while.", I proclaimed. He smiled. "Smart. What about Singles Awareness Day?"
"It's just a day.", I said, shrugging. He ruffled my hair, and I scowled. The bell rang for 3rd period.
"Good for you. Better get to class.", he replied, smiling. I nodded, and walked to 3rd period.
At lunch, I went to the ASB meeting. Ryan and Jenna, our president, were already there. The treasurer, Logan Burnside, walked in behind me. I met Ryan's eyes, and he half-smiled, his eyes crinkling in the corners. He must've heard about my break-up with Dante. My heart sank, and I looked to Logan. And then I waited. And then the sinking stopped.
"Let's begin the meeting.", Jenna announced. Ryan caught my eye, and mouthed,"I'm sorry." I nodded. And I was okay.
